The Brunate Funicular is the fastest, most convenient, and comfortable way to reach the town from the city of Como. Inaugurated in 1894, it is still widely used by a massive number of tourists who, especially in the beautiful season, flock to the beautiful lakeside city to use it as a starting point to reach Brunate, obviously by funicular. Let’s discover the history, timetables, and prices of this highly sought-after means of transportation.
History of the Funicular
Until almost the end of the 19th century, the only way to reach Brunate was by walking an old mule track or, alternatively, two particularly winding carriage roads. But in 1890, a promotion committee was established for the construction of a tramway that would connect Como to Brunate: a project strongly desired by some vacationers and by the inhabitants of the town itself.
After obtaining the necessary approvals and starting the works, the Como – Brunate funicular officially saw the light on November 11, 1894. Since then, it began to be widely exploited by tourists, who finally had the opportunity to enjoy the beauties of Brunate through a safe, comfortable, and pleasantly scenic means.
Where It Is Located and How to Reach the Brunate Funicular
The Brunate Funicular is located in Como, in Piazza Alcide De Gaspari, in a beautiful lakeside area. It is also easily accessible by car, by going to Como and leaving it in one of the city’s car parks, some of which are located along the road near the funicular area.
However, due to the high tourist influx affecting the capital, with consequent difficulties in finding parking, public transportation is probably a more convenient solution. Como is indeed easily reachable both by several local bus lines, which connect the city to the neighboring ones, and by trains.
If you opt for this second solution, the advice is to get off at Como Lago station, located a few steps away from the funicular. Once there, it is sufficient to walk along the enchanting lakeside promenade until you reach the entrance of the funicular, well signposted by signs.
Opening Days and Hours
The Como – Brunate funicular operates every day, from 6 am to 10:30 pm. On Saturdays and throughout the summer period, the timetable is extended until midnight. For precise information about the trips, you can consult the official website.
The distance between Como and Brunate is covered in just over 5 minutes of travel. Upon request, it is possible to make a stop at Carescione, another scenic point overlooking Lake Como.
Prices of the Brunate Funicular
The cost of a one-way trip from Como to Brunate via the funicular is only 3.10 euros, while the round-trip solution costs 5.70 euros. Trips generally take place approximately every half hour, but due to the high number of people, it is highly recommended to arrive at the location well in advance of the departure time. Discounts are available for groups (for large groups, booking is recommended).
